Research Scientist II with HSWRI’s Sustainable Seafood Program. Since joining HSWRI in November 2021, Dr. Huo has focused on invertebrate and seaweed (restorative) aquaculture, with an emphasis on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). He has conducted research in these fields for over 20 years. His expertise includes the aquaculture of economically important echinoderms and shellfish—from spawning to grow-out—such as sea cucumbers, oysters, scallops, and clams. He also specializes in seaweed biology, ecology, and aquaculture, including the study of harmful macroalgal blooms. His work extends to the development of IMTA and recirculating IMTA (RAS-IMTA) systems that integrate seaweeds, invertebrates, and finfish. Additionally, he conducts research on aquaculture environments and bio-extraction methods for ecological remediation. Dr. Huo has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and has secured numerous research grants.
