History
Returning Benefits to the Sea
Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) scientific organization dedicated to conserving and renewing marine life for a healthier planet. Through fieldwork, lab research, and community collaboration, we transform scientific discovery into real-world solutions—rescuing stranded animals, rebuilding fish populations, and helping ocean ecosystems thrive.
Founded in 1963 with the guiding mission “to return to the sea some measure of the benefits derived from it,” HSWRI was established by SeaWorld co-founder Milton C. Shedd. He believed that a nonprofit research institute supporting science-based conservation could deepen public understanding of the ocean.
Named in honor of pioneering marine biologist Dr. Carl L. Hubbs, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute has grown into a trusted leader in ocean science. While we remain separate from SeaWorld, our teams continue to collaborate with Park curators and veterinarians on marine animal research and rescue efforts across California and Florida.

A Legacy of Leadership
Milton C. Shedd (1923–2002)
An accomplished angler and visionary conservationist, Milt Shedd co-founded SeaWorld and conceptualized Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute. His belief in the power of education and science to protect marine life still drives our mission today. Milt’s later efforts, including reef restoration from decommissioned oil rigs, reflected his lifelong dedication to ocean health. His legacy continues through his son, Bill Shedd, who until recently served as Chairman of the Board.
Dr. Carl L. Hubbs and Laura C. Hubbs
Internationally renowned scientists, Carl helped shape modern marine biology. His passion for discovery, education, and stewardship, and his reputation for scientific integrity, live on in our mission, our name, and every project we pursue.
